Breast enhancement surgery (clinically known as mammoplasty) seeks to amplify the shape and beauty of the female breast. Potential benefits of breast enhancement surgery include larger breasts, a reduction in wrinkling and more dramatic cleavage.
Many women consider using breast enhancement surgery when they notice a reduction in size or a worn look following a pregnancy and nursing. Women may also turn to breast enhancement surgery when seeking to enlarge their breasts to a fuller form or to make them more proportionate and complementary to their body type. Breast enhancement surgery can also be used as a cosmetic rehabilitative measure following a mastectomy or injury.
Breast enhancement enlarges the breast by means of making a small incision into the breast area and inserting a breast implant. The surgery typically lasts about one hour and is commonly performed on an outpatient basis at our state-of-the-art surgical unit in Phoenix, Arizona.
What are the Benefits of a Breast Enhancement?
Dr. Chasby Sacks has helped thousands of women in Phoenix, Scottsdale, and the surrounding areas boost their confidence with breast enhancement surgery. Dr. Sacks is committed to using optimized, patient-specific procedures to obtain results that leave his patients fully satisfied.
Breast Enhancement in Phoenix
There are several possible locations for the small incision that will be used for inserting the breast implant.
1. The most frequent technique utilizes an incision made in the crease at the lowest portion of the breast.
2. Another technique, though less frequently used, involves making an incision in the armpit.
3. A third technique makes an incision around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).
4. Another technique uses an incision in the belly button.
The best technique will be decided together between the patient and Dr. Sacks during the consultation.
Inserting an implant behind each breast can increase a woman's breast size by one or more bra cup sizes. Using very safe sedation anesthesia, the breast tissue is raised to create an open pocket under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle. Implants typically contain either a saline solution (similar to saltwater) or the implants can contain a silicone gel. The newest silicone gel is called cohesive gel and is inherently safer. In some circumstances, particularly those in which there is breast asymmetry (uneven breast size) or if the patient has quite a lot of her own breast tissue, an inflatable saline implant may be used to allow the surgeon to adjust the level of inflation and attain breast symmetry and balance.
Complications & Recovery
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. A comfortable sports bra is applied right after surgery to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts. The bra will need to be worn for several weeks. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery. This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication prescribed by Dr. Sacks before the surgery. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by Dr. Sacks that describe what to do after the surgery.
Some complications after a breast enhancement include:
Swelling usually subsides after a few days to a week.
Bruising is minimized by not taking any blood thinning substances (as advised by Dr. Sacks) and by taking an ancient herbal remedy - Arnica Montoya - a few days before and after the surgery.
Discomfort is usually moderate and will be helped by prescriptions from Dr. Sacks.
Infection is extremely rare at Arizona Cosmetic Surgery as Dr. Sacks will have prescribed an antibiotic for the patient to take starting the day before surgery until about a week after surgery. If infection does occur, the steps necessary to correct this will be discussed.
Asymmetry occurs when one of the patient's breasts will look quite different than the other one before surgery. Depending on the shape and size difference, more symmetry can be obtained with the implants and sometimes skin surgery as well. After surgery, the two breasts may not be "twin sisters," but can look much more symmetrical than before. Your expectations will be discussed with Dr. Sacks.
Bleeding into the space around the implant or hematoma is rare, but may occur soon after the surgery usually due to too much activity by the patient or sometimes from having taken something like Aspirin, which thins the blood. The hematoma may require removal by Dr. Sacks.
Scarring in the skin incision (the incision scar used to insert the implant) will be almost unnoticeable after some time, but occasionally - particularly with patients having more pigment in the skin – the scar may be a little more noticeable. Rarely, a thickened and raised scar (a hypertrophy or keloid) may need treatment by Dr. Sacks.
Firmness may be due to some tightening of the thin layer of scar tissue that forms around 100 percent of implants. Normally, this thin layer (sometimes paper thin) remains larger than the implant, but occasionally, it shrinks and distorts the implant, making it feel and look differently than the other breast. This is called scar contracture or capsule and may require a simple revision surgery to correct it.
Results may vary.
